Sitting Bull's name

[edit]

On page 26 of the book, "Sitting Bull: His Life and Legacy" by Ernie Lapointe, (Great-grandson of Sitting Bull), the specific Lakota translation is given for the name of Sitting Bull, Tatanka Iyotake, as meaning "Buffalo Bull Sits Down." — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2605:A601:A9AB:E500:5C9E:AAD2:FC2A:4D02 (talk) 16:45, 6 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

At the beginning of this article, Sitting Bull's name in Lakota is spelled out in IPA as [tˣaˈtˣə̃ka ˈi.jɔtakɛ]. I cannot find any explanation of what the little superscript x's mean. Undefined Symbols are the Great Barrier of Learning. Friendly Person (talk) 17:09, 6 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Friendly person: that represents the guttural h sound that has no equivalent in the English language. You can hear that word spoken correctly here. Other audio example of that sound can be found here and here.  oncamera  (talk page) 19:10, 6 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Killing of Sitting Bull's son, Crow Foot

[edit]

If you read Crow Foot's Wikipedia article, it says, though without any source or evidence, "Crow Foot was killed along with his father on December 15, 1890, by a group of Indian agents". After googling for a bit, I found an excerpt from a book called "Voices of Wounded Knee" by William S. E. Coleman, which states on page 211 that Crow Foot was purposely murdered, even though he was unarmed and didn't do anything (according to eyewitness accounts). I feel like that is pretty important and should be mentioned in the "Death and burial" section, instead of just having it say "The police killed Sitting Bull and seven of his supporters at the site [...]". My I suggest deleting the "out" after "exited" in the last sentence on the section on Sitting Bull's early life? It is redundant and looks sloppy. 85.197.14.112 (talk) 21:44, 14 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • What I think should be changed:

Divide the "Battle of the Little Bighorn" into more sections and cut down for clarity.

  • Why it should be changed:

The Battle of the Little Bighorn section details much of the leadup to the battle, which is part of the Great Sioux War (e.g. Sun Dance and the January 1 ultimatum, which occurred six months before the battle). It also includes information that occurs well after the battle (e.g. Sitting Bull in Canada).

Weldon portrait

[edit]

I am surprised that Weldon's portrait isn't shown here, the only portrait made of Sitting Bull and right before his death.

More citations needed?

[edit]

In the second paragraph (which begins with "Before the Battle..."), the first sentence ends with citation [8]. After that citation, there are no additional citations in the remainder of that paragraph, and there are no citations in the next paragraph. Should there be more citations? New Lead Image

[edit]

I think that there are very high quality photos of Sitting Bull throughout his life, including the lead image. However, I suggest we change the lead photo to this because it shows a lot of detail. Wcamp9 (talk) 20:09, 5 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The design of bag he's wearing there isn't traditional to the Lakota compared to the feathers in the current photo. I'm not sure your suggested photo is a good choice to represent him as a Lakota medicine man and leader, considering there's a lot of photos of him to pick from that have him wearing clothes closer to men of his band in that era.  oncamera  (talk page) 06:28, 6 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
