Category:Albedo features on Mars

[edit]

Should this article be listed in Category:Albedo features on Mars? I don't know enough about Meridiani Planum to determine if it's considered an albedo feature. We have special categories for craters of Mars and hills of Mars, but this fits in neither of those. Perhaps we should make a category called Topography of Mars, or whatever the fitting name is. Any suggestions? —Brim 15:07, Jan 26, 2005 (UTC)

No. The historical albedo feature is Sinus Meridiani. When space probes explored Mars and we finally got clear pictures of what was on its surface, a lot of surface features received names inspired by the geographically (or "areo"graphically) nearby albedo feature names.
There is currently a clumsily named parent category Category:Surface feature nomenclature of solar system bodies. Based on established practice, you could create a List of geological features on Mars page, which would have sections for each type of feature, except the mountain and crater sections would just be links to List of mountains on Mars and List of craters on Mars. Actually, based on http://planetarynames.wr.usgs.gov/mare/mareTOC.html , there's a big list of "plana" and most other features, so List of geological features on Mars page would probably just be a link page.
Here's a useful list of Latin plurals: http://planetarynames.wr.usgs.gov/jsp/append5.jsp
So if you wanted to create a page like List of plana on Mars and Category:Plana on Mars (similar to the existing pages for craters), you have your work cut out for you.
